Taking Care of Yourself

Paul instructed a younger minister to take heed to himself.

”Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.”  I Timothy 4:16 NKJV

What does that mean?  That phrase could be translated, “Get ahold of yourself.”
“Make your own spiritual life a priority.”
“Do not get so busy that you forget you have spiritual needs too”

Timothy was pastoring a large prominent church. He was young and inexperienced. He was probably being stretched thin with the demands of the ministry. Paul was concerned about two things:
  1. Timothy made his spiritual life a priority
  2. Timothy made his theology a priority

Take care of your spiritual life and your theology and you will save both yourself and those you minister to. Do not get so busy with the demands you are facing that you neglect those two things.

Take heed is a strong word. It is not a suggestion but a command.

Paul knew for Timothy to be successful in ministry and for him to last for the long haul that he needed to be thriving in his spiritual life and he needed to have a depth in theology.

The same is true for you and I!
