How to Respond to Unjust Criticism?

There is peace in choosing not to respond. One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned from Jesus is that we don’t need to defend ourselves. God is always faithful to handle it.

There have been times when people have wronged me or spoken against me in ways that were hurtful and unfair, causing me significant problems. In those moments, my natural instinct is to retaliate, to defend myself, and to hurt those who have hurt me.

Yet, when Jesus was accused, He responded with silence, which astonished His critics. As Matthew 27:13-14 recounts:

"Then Pilate said to Him, ‘Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?’ But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.”

Why was Jesus able to remain silent? How can we do the same in the face of criticism?

- Jesus trusted His Father to take care of it—and so can you.
- Jesus knew the truth of the situation—so do you.
- Jesus was secure in His identity—you are too.

So, when someone says something hurtful or unfair, or when accusations are posted against you, trust God to handle it. Guard your heart against bitterness, offense, and unforgiveness.

A prayer I often pray is: “Father, I submit to Your authority and surrender to Your sovereignty.”  But do I truly mean it? Am I willing to trust God with my critics? Am I willing to let Him defend me while I remain silent?

Of course, there are times when speaking up is necessary. Ecclesiastes 3:7 reminds us that there is “a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.”

We are called to speak up against injustice toward others and to defend the weak. But I’ve come to the conviction that I don’t need to do that for myself.

God will take care of it all.
