Member Care - How do we Keep a Pure Heart?

Keeping my heart pure is difficult. The Bible teaches that the heart is deceitful. It can fool me.

I think my motives are pure but in reality they are not.

Recently I secretly rejoiced in another person’s issue. Rather than being emphatic, I inwardly experienced some pleasure in their pain.

I know the Bible teaches to leave justice up to him. I disobeyed these verses:

”Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.“. Romans 12:19-21 ESV

I thought I had forgiven the person. I thought I had moved on but my heart deceived me. Rather than feeding him, giving the person something to drink, I inwardly took pleasure.

How about you? What is the condition of your heart? How can you be aware if your heart is being deceived?

  • be sensitive to the Holy Spirit
  • have people in your life who tell you the truth
  • allow the Word of God to shape your heart
  • quickly repent when the Holy Spirit reveals sin in your life

Guard your heart. Everything flows out of it. If I do not get my heart right with this person, it will negatively impact the relationships that mean the most to me.

The same is true for you.
